In class today, we presented our modernized adaptation of Romeo and Juliet and shared with our classmates. My story of adaptation was quite different with others; I changed whole plot and content of the story while others just changed some specific scenes or ending of the story. During voting, pretty lot of people chose my adaptation; the reason might be because of the fresh theme and completely different content with the original version of Romeo and Juliet. Therefore 4 people, who are me, Helen, Lesley, and Jamal decided to perform my adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. In the plot of the story, the biggest change of my adaptation is that there is a feud between zombie and human instead of Capulets and Montague. It is basically a love story between zombie called Romeo and a woman human called Juliet. Also in my adaptation, I condensed all characters into 4 characters who are Romeo, Juliet, Rosaline, and Romeo’s mother, and I more focused on love triangle among Rosaline, Romeo, and Juliet rather than the grudge between two families like what original version does.
My character in the adaptation is Juliet. Juliet can be more special in this adaptation of Romeo and Juliet than the original version, because Juliet is the only human characters among all 4 characters. Since rest of Romeo, Rosaline, and Romeo’s mother are all zombies, Juliet must show some difference with them; she should act like a really ordinary highschool teenage girl. The most important scenes for Juliet might be the party scene and the balcony scene when Romeo confess his identity that he is a zombie. The homecoming party scene is absolutely one of the key scenes since it is the first place where Romeo and Juliet meet, and fall in love. Like the original version, party scene connects between Romeo and Juliet; therefore Romeo and Juliet should show impressive act through the play so that audience can guess that they really fall in love to each other and Romeo has been attracted by Juliet’s appearance. Juliet also have to act she has fallen love with a boy who never met before, but fall in love just by eye contacting. Balcony scene is also one of the most significant scenes, because Romeo reveals his identity to Juliet on the balcony. As Juliet starts discovering Romeo’s strange points such as his skin color and cold body, Romeo thinks that he should confess that he is a zombie in order to lead the relationship deeply. So balcony scene is the where Juliet knows that Romeo is a zombie but not a human. During the play, Juliet should act that she thinks it is a joke at first, but realizes that he is a real zombie and feel afraid and shocked by that. Juliet should be look like she has been frightened and scared of his boyfriend, and starts getting mad about the fact that Romeo has been hidden the secret that he is a zombie and does not tell to Juliet until now.

Juliet should portray her strong love toward Romeo through revealing that Juliet still loves him although he is a zombie, and Juliet can take risk about it.
