Fires in the mirror performance response
All three groups showed great performances based on the story of Fires in the mirror. Each groups was given with different themes of the play, and allowed to create own script based on the lines from the play. Ours were about violence, so we tried to find the lines that showing the grudge between Jews and Blacks, and the lines which contained some brutal words like blood or dead in order to show the theme of the violence and cruelity between the two races. I think our performance was pretty well producted since we showed a sense of violence on the both perspectives from Jews and Black. At the beginning, Jack narrated the background summary of the Crown heights incident that the audience could easily understand the background situation. Jacob further expressed his character well by reading his lines loudly and showing his anger toward the black people about blacks judging Jews only with their race. I was a black man who supposed to show sadness and sense of anger toward Jews since they killed the black guy but they cared more about themselves rather than the dead boy. Therefore, I high pitched my voice tone and added gesture by clapping loud to describe the word "bang" more dramatically. We also put gloomy background music while acting out in order to stimulate characters' emotions.
Other group's performance was based on the theme of political issues. In the group there were Ivan, Cassidy, and Lesley; they mainly talked about racism and discrimination occured in the Crown Heights from the perspective of black people. At the beginning part of their performance, all three of the characters acted out while sitting on the chair. However, they later stood up as they read through their own lines, and put some emotions to their tones; therefore I could see if they were angry and sad about the Crown Heights incident and I could feel the sense of unfairness and unjustice in the society among different races.
The last group's performance mainly focused on cultural and religious issues. There were Stella, Denny, and David in the group, and they were all sitting in one row. Rather than simply reading lines, they read lines to each other; therefore it seemed like the characters were having a conversation. Also when Denny read lines, David and Stella added some small gestures by using their hands to explain and support it. I think they showed a sense of good cooperation among the characters while clearly telling audience about the content and theme of the play.
