Last week, I explored Verbatim theater with Ivan, Jack, Jacob, and Nia. Nia and I wrote the script, Ivan directed and coached actors’ performance, and Jacob and Jack acted Ivan’s character. The topic of our theater was about the difference between Vdp and markin; it was mostly focused on the advantage of living in Markin and worst part of the Vdp. People do verbatim theater to explore the topic which is very realistic, and to base the story on character’s real experience and opinions. Personally, I think that our performance was successfully done due to everyone’s passionable participation. I and Nia highlighted the convenient facilities in Markin to express its benefit; we further exaggerated some parts, such as when Jacob could solve math problems which he could not in Vdp, in order to maximize their difference and Markin’s convenient. Jack and Jacob practiced hard to be seem like Ivan through performing his gestures, and the way that Ivan talks. Especially I could significantly noticed that Jack improved his acting a lot compared to last year; he delivered his line clearly, acted realistically like Ivan, and performed very seriously. Ivan’s huge contribution further made our performance to be successful. He directed the whole theater by coaching the characters and their acting styles. The process was little difficult at first when we had to choose a topic of the theater, but later after choosing the topic about the difference between VDP and Markin in Ivan’s perspective, it was easy and fun since everyone hardly participated. I learned about Verbatim Theater that it is a form of theater based on people’s interview and their real thoughts. I also thought it was a very fresh experience because we did not perform through just memorizing lines from books, but the whole context was about our personal stories in school.
