Performance reflection
In my group, I was night woman and Lesley was Celianne. We tried to reveal the harshness that Haitian women went through their lives, showing the theme of hopelessness and misery. Night woman and Celinanne had a common that they both had kids without husbands, so they had all responsibilities to support the family and take care of them. Night woman's job, a prostitute, and the fact that Celinanne got pregnant due to military's rape clearly show their miserable lives and the harsh realities given to poor women. Through the conversation between night woman and Celianne, night woman sympathized her, and advised her to not become like her, night woman, and be a proud person to kid. The advice of night woman reveals the feelings of loneliness and shameful that she feels while having a job, and her strong love to son since she wants to protect his innocence and hopes to become proud to his son. They exposed themselves to each other by telling their shameful stories. Additionally, they could understand each other's perspectives and situations very well since both of them already faced to the harsh realities in their lives as living as a women.
Ivan and Jacob's performance was pretty short, but it had lines and movements showing the perspectives of night woman. Ivan used gestures to put curtain and divide the room into two in order to show her job during night. He also says goodnight to show caring aspect of mom. Jacob was also a night woman, and he talks about herself, and his emotion of being nightwoman to support family.
Nia and Jack were night woman and Guy from heaven. Jack, who comes from heaven and became an angel, talks to his wife Nia, who became a night woman due to her husband's sudden death. While having a conversation, Nia asks Jack why he left, and confesses Guy that she became a prostitute because his death. It seemed like Nia lost her hope and could not understand Guy for a fact that he left the whole family and did not about the consequence.
However, Jack said that he was satisfied even after his death, since he achieved the dream. He further said he felt pleasured that his life became free, and he eventually would be able to fly.
David, Denny, and Cassidy were all night women, and they talked to each other about their lives and thoughts. Cassidy had disagreement with David and Denny since she thought it was important to support the son's education while other two emphasized getting job and earning money.
Overall, it was very interesting to see characters interact with other characters from a different stories. For example, I liked the way how Nia and Jack communicated because in the book, Guy is already dead and never be able to talk with his wife again, but they modified interestingly and connected the story of the night women and A wall of fire rising. Additionally, I could see a lot of people choose to be a night women and tell people about her struggles and miseries throughout her life. It was pretty fun to see how others interpreted her and her thought or mind about the importance of education to his son. Since most of people acted the night women, it became a chance to think of the lives of prostitutes, which also conveys the harsh lives of poor Haitian women. It draws the society during the time that poor Haitian women who were uneducated were supposed to be night women or marketplace workers to support the family. Not only the night woman, but Celianne also shows their miserable lives, which were sexually harassed by the militaries and government.
