Visit to a Small Planet
The article tells us the various meaning of play, and the author Elinor Fuchs uses metaphor and express play with ball. He says make the ball not too small that it doesn’t lose detail, but not so big that details overwhelms the whole. He expresses play is not a flat work of literature and not a description in poetry of another world, but itself another world passing before you in time and space. Also nothing in play is without significance, but it asks us to focus upon it total awareness, to bring our attention and curiosity without the censorship of selective interpretation. Additionally,he expresses entire literature work as a planet, and uses a lot of questions to emphasize the important things that affects to the play and literature works; such as time period, climate, mood, dramatic words, and sound. Furthermore he emphasizes readers to seek the changes happening in the play; change in language, time, tone, action, and landscape. Lastly,he notes about the characters in the play, and if they fit to the pattern of the story. He tells us that characters mean only as they inhabit, enact, fulfill, engage a succession of sites, actions, and objects under a specific set of conditions, which means that they are consistence of a complex artistic pattern. After reading his article, I learn what should readers be aware of during reading a play, and the important things compose play.
