Character: The night woman
1. WHO AM I?
She is an anonymous 25 years old woman who has a young son. She works as a prostitute to earn money so that she can support her family, especially her son’s education aspect. Although she sacrifices through working as a night girl, it seems like she is sacrificed with the fact that she can earn money with the job, and the fact that it is one of the ways to earn money pretty easily compared to other proper jobs. She tries to prevent her son knowing her job since she wants to protect his innocence. However, she knows that he will know the fact in the future, therefore she is always prepared to tell him that the ghost of the father has been has returned from the heaven.
2. WHAT TIME IS IT?
The time is not clearly mentioned, but most of the story happens during night since she works as a night girl. Her actual life starts at midnight as her patrons visit home while her young son is sleeping.
3. WHERE AM I?
She lives with son in a tiny house which only has a single room, indicating their poverty. While she work at night, she uses curtain to divide room into two, making two separated spaces, in order to make him ignorant from knowing the reality and her job.
4. WHAT SURROUNDS ME?
She is surrounded by misery, dark, and hardships. She probably does not want to get a job like prostitute, but that might be the only choice she could made in her situation, showing the life of poor haitian girls who have to support family by themselves. At the last scene, she smokes in the early morning after her patrons leave, then she watches other women go out to marketplace; this part shows sense of loneliness that she feels through. She must feel lonely that she is enable to tell her emotions to anyone since there’s no one around her and she further has to lie her son through making some fantasy stories in order to protect him from recognizing the harsh reality.
5. WHAT ARE THE GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES?
Her life is on the basis of poverty and huge responsibility to support the family since she has no husband. She even chooses to be a prostitute because she knows the harsh reality, and the fact that being a lightworker will possibly to bring her big amount of money which does not require education or high effort. Her life is such a struggle and huge difficulty since she is tired enough to have a job but at the same time she has to protect her son to stay as a innocent kid, by lying and creating some fantasy stories therefore preventing him from realizing miserable life.
6. WHAT IS MY RELATIONSHIP?
The most important person in her life would be her young son. Pretty every difficulties and devotions that she makes is to provide her son a better life and to support him. She further has 2 more relationships with her patrons, Emmanuel and Alexandre, but she does not really care about them since they are only connections who bring money to her.
7. WHAT DO I WANT?
First of all, she wants enough money to support her son and his future. She wants him to be educated so that he can live better life but not miserably like how she lives. She wants to provide him better education, background, and that is the only hope and motivation of her life.
8. WHAT IS IN MY WAY?
Poverty, which is a biggest struggle that she has to face throughout her life. Poverty makes her life struggling, and even leads her to get a job as a prostitute. She is also responsible to prevent her son knowing from her real job.
9. WHAT DO I DO TO GET WHAT I WANT?
Unfortunately she should keep have her job and work during night to earn money. Because, without her job, she would not be able to maintain the family or support her son being educated.
