“New York Day Women” notes

Suzette is having a typical day in New York City but she sees her mom walking down the city street. She is kind of astonished by the fact of seeing her mom in Manhattan since she thinks her mom has never been out from Brooklyn.  Since her mom is always being worried and afraid of things in Manhattan, she decided to follow her mom as she walks down the street.
As Suzette follows her back, it reminds her about what her mom told Suzette before, such as, she used to compare the city with Haiti, showing the cruelness and aggressiveness of Haitians and its society. Her mom does not even go out dinner with other people or take a subway because of the fear. Her mom suddenly stops to buy a can of soda and African printed dress. She further gets a hot dog that she used to never eat. Lastly, she stops at the park and sits on the bench. A while later, a woman comes up with her young son and gives him to Suzette's mom. After the boy's mom leaves, they talk friendly and the mom takes care of him. After an hour, the woman comes back to pick up her son, and the mom's work is completed. Since Suzette never knows about her mom's job before, it shows that the mom perhaps felt ashamed of telling her job to a loving daughter.
