Children of the sea :
The story starts with a male writer writing a letter to his lover. He is currently at a sea on a boat with other people, and noting his endless love toward his lover. Back in Haiti, the female writer writes a letter about her despair life without a male writer. She worries if the male writer is in danger at a sea, so she listens to radio tapes all the time from the male writer, but her father keeps trying to destroy them. Both female and male writer share their despair stories happening in Haiti and on the boat, which showing their hopelessness life controlled by the government and military. For example, the male writer shares a story of a woman called Celianne, who impregnated a baby by the force of a group of macoutes. She ended up committing suicide, which showing their discouraged life. Back in Haiti, the female writer escapes from being accused, since she is the member of the youth federation. However, she could save her life since her father sells all of his land and property; therefore, she later finds words thank his father for saving her life. Back on the boat, the male writer is in big danger since the boat almost sinks below the waves and the female writer intuitively feels that through seeing his father making a black butterfly shape while moving his hand quickly.
Nineteen thirty-seven:
The story is about a girl called Josephine goes through watching the whole process of her mother died; the story clearly shows the theme of death and sense of misery. The girl Josephine was born on the night of the Massacre, and her grandmother sacrificed to save her life on that day. Her mom has been accused to the prison of killing children and acting like a witch. In the story, Madonna is symbolized as her mother, so when Josephine saw the doll had tears near eyes, she assumed her mother's death and visited a prison to meet her. The treatment that the prison provided to her mom and other inmates were so bad, showing senses of strong immorality and cruelness. After Josephine went back to home, a woman called Jacqueline came to tell her that her mom was in danger of death, due to illness. When they arrived at prison, her mom was already dead. She even watched her mom getting burned inside of the fire, which was driven by the government; they burned her body to prevent her spirit spreading the area.
A wall of fire rising:
It is a story about a man called guy and his strong fascination about the balloon and desire to not live like his father. He has a wife and son, little guy. Little guy goes to school and guy works at a Sugarmill near his home. There is a big balloon at Sugarmill place, and guy always goes there to see it, since he has a big dream of flying, which indicates his desire of freedom and escape from the miserable reality. Unlike his wife who wants little guy to stay in school and be educated, Guy wants his son to work like him since money is important to support the family. Therefore when the little guy shows the performance that he learned in front of parents, the mom is always cheerful but big Guy is indifferent. The wife starts to worry about big Guy since he seems like he doesn't really care anything except for the big balloon. The wife and little Guy go the field by the sugar mill, and they see Guy is flying on the balloon. As they get astonished, Guy suddenly jumps out from the balloon and ended up being dead. Although he achieves his biggest dream, riding balloon, he could not save himself. His desire of flying and possessing wings lead to death.

In order to protect her son's innocence and to prevent him knowing her job, she is always prepared her fabrication. She has two clients, a doctor and an accordion player. The doctor always brings flowers to her, which showing his sexual desire toward her. To complete her night job without waking her son, she puts up the curtain to separate his bed from hers and takes the pain. If the son wakes up, she is ready to tell him that "his father has come, that an angel brought him back from heaven for a while."
