Twelfth Night
On April third, Yale Repertory Theatre presented a play called "Twelfth Night" that was originally written by William Shakespeare and directed by Carl Cofield. The setting of the show was the cosmopolitan port city of Illyria and the time era with the near future. The production of Twelfth Night reclaimed Shakespeare and reconstructed the play by changing the time zone with adding more vital and vivid performance into the show. I want to give a big applause to the casts who delivered great performances to the audience: Abubakr Ali (Sir Andrew Aguecheek), Erron Crawford (Feste), William Demeritt (Orsino), Denzel Fields (Ensemble), Allen Gilmore (Malvolio), Tiffany Denise Hobbs (Olivia), Moses Ingram (Viola), Wesley T. Jones (Ensemble), Manu Kumasi (Antonio), Chivas Michael (Sir Toby), Ilia Isorelys Paulino (Maria), Stephon Pettway (Ensemble), Jakeem Dante Powell (Sebastian), Raffeal A. Sears (Ensemble, Fabian), Makenky Welsh (Ensemble), and Brit West (Ensemble).
The play tells a story of Viola and her twin brother Sebastian have been shipwrecked. So each thinks the other has been dead. Viola faked herself as a young man and gets a job as a servant for Orsino under, the name of Cesario. Orsino is in love with Olivia, but she, unfortunately, has rejected all of his confessions. Therefore, he sends Cesario to send Olivia a love letter. However, Olivia falls in love with Cesario. At the same time, Viola is secretly having a crush on Orsino, which becomes a complicated relationship among those characters. Later on, Viola's brother Sebastian, who believes his sister is dead, arrives in Illyria. As he meets Olivia, she mistakes him for Cesario and asks him to marry her, and Sebastian agrees with it. Finally, everything is revealed, and it ends happily by the brother and sister getting reunited and the love triangle getting resolved into two couples, Viola and Orsino, and Sebastian and Olivia.
I loved the show because of its staging, performance, and casts; everything was perfect and amazing. I was already impressed by the first scene where the music comes out from the futuristic screen and the DJ stands on the middle of the stage. This show was completely different with the show that I had seen before. Since the time era is future, the stage and costumes were very fancy and new which reminded me of the future time. The staging was amazing, not only because of the screen that they had, but also because of the fancy lights which were so colorful. The color wasn't just basic colors; I felt like I was splashing the color from a palette that I use for my art class. The staging was artsy, fancy, and amazing. Sound, color, light, even costumes, nothing was incompleted. Also they had a lot of unique props; I was shocked when they had light stabber, and a chair that can be wrapped so easily. Their props were not just so fancy, but it was so brilliant and unique. As an art student, I was really interested to see their props, fancy and colorful costumes and lights from the screen, and amazing sound effects.
Not only their props and staging, but also their performance was great. They showed amazing performance withs songs, in which they put sound effect so the eco sounded great. Their performance made me to think of their hard work and practice behind the curtain. They were never murmurring, and seemed really professional. They knew how to change their voice tone or facial expression depend on the situation, and never made audience to feel bored or tired of watching the show despite the fact that it was 2 hr play.
If I have time, I would love to visit Yale theatre and watch different play. I really respect their acting, performance, and I was surprised by their fancy techniques and equipments. It would be pleasur to watch another play from the group.
